The King’s Style
First of all STB would like to congratulate Colin Firth on his fantastic Oscars win, proof that our royals pretty much trump anything when it comes to
STB could talk for hours about how the monarchy has influenced fashion over the centuries (Elizabethan ruffs, powdered wigs, pugs …) but when it comes to dressing like a dapper gentleman it was Edward the infamous abdicator, not George that set a fashion standard that still stands today.
George may have been the one that won the hearts of the people, but it was Edward with his natty dressing that proved that he was the snappy trend-setter of the two. He became so synonymous with wearing a classic double-breasted suit with a check-on-check design that it became known as the Prince of Wales check. Some will tell you that he was the designer of this particular check, which sadly isn’t true – its origins can be traced to a remote part of Scotland, but what cannot be denied is that of all the fabrications a modern gent can opt for the PoW is still the most regal.
Austin Reed prides itself in tailoring suits fit for a King (hear that Wills?) and with two royal warrants, one from the Prince of Wales himself, you know that our Prince of Wales suit probably carry that little bit more clout.
Here are three of our favourites:
