Flower Power – It’s not just for girls
It’s getting to that time of year again. The sun is shining, people are carrying both umbrellas and sunglasses and women embark upon the epic journey that is parading their freshly-bought summer wardrobes through the streets of town and country. As a dapper chap, STB doesn’t like to complain, especially when it comes to stylish ladies, but it can sometimes feel like there is very little choice for the fashionable gent once the thermometer pushes 20 degrees. In winter we find ourselves wearing a suit or chinos or jeans and a jumper; in summer we find ourselves wearing a suit or chinos or jeans and a polo shirt. This is fine, we are men after all and apparently aren’t fans of the dreaded ‘choice’ but its time to stand up and be counted (in the style stakes at least).
Now don’t automatically stop reading when I say this, but have you considered florals? Still reading? Good. Firstly they’re not just for girls. Yes we don’t want to end up looking like a lost American tourist emblazoned with larger-than-life flora and fauna, but if you take a look at Liberty prints you begin to get an idea of where we’re going with this. Subtle but giving an air of fashionable nonchalance at the same time, where florals on women say ‘hooray summer has arrived’ florals on men say ‘hey look at me, I’m a man and yes I’m wearing flowers, but I’m man enough to pull this off’.
STB recommends a ditsy print (that’s where the flowers are really small) with a grey suit to give your workwear wardrobe a warm-weather lift, however if your boss doesn’t appreciate a fashion-forward thinker maybe a floral tie will encapsulate just the right amount of summer feeling without attracting any odd looks. For the weekend, STB recommends the pièce de résistance Liberty print, it doesn’t look out of place with both your jeans and your jumpers and you can remind your girlfriend that you don’t need to bring her flowers, because you are the flowers.
